Gallantry Medals

If you mention Gallantry medal to anybody, they automatically think of the Victoria Cross. The medal was introduced as the premier award for gallantry across all ranks on 29th January 1856 by Queen Victoria. There were 5 Victoria Crosses awarded for Operation Market Garden.

However there are many more medals that have been (and still are) issued for gallantry, ranging from the Military Medal, to the Military Cross to the George Medal and the George Cross.

The area of Gallantry medals will be updated in 2007.

John Collins VC, DCM, MM

"On 31st October, 1917 at Wadi Saba, Beersheeba, Palestine, Corporal Collins repeatedly went out when his battalion was forced to lie out in the open under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, and brought back many wounded. In subsequent operations he rallied his men and led the final assault with great skill in spite of heavy fire at close range and uncut wire. He killed 15 of the enemy and with a Lewis gun section cover the reorganisation and consolidation most effectively, although isolated and under fire from snipers and guns "
