General Service Medal 1962 with Northern Ireland Clasp
The Northern Ireland Clasp for the General Service Medal 1962 was authorised by Army Order No 65 and was released in 1971.
Qualification for the medal could be gained in a number of different ways:
Complete 30 days service in Northern Ireland from 14 August 1969, whilst on the strength of a Regular Naval, Army or Air Force unit.
Complete 30 days service in Northern Ireland from 14 August 1969, as a member of the Ulster Defence Regiment.
Complete 30 days service afloat in the waters adjacent to Northern Ireland in support of land forces from 14 August 1969.
If an individuals did not meet the qualifying service due to death or casualty evacuation, then the medal would still be awarded. The qualification period could be waivered if personnel were engaged in a hazardous mission of a short duration.
The operational name for service in Northern Ireland is Op BANNER. This operation is due to finish shortly due to the normalisation of Northern Ireland.
